Scaling & Root Planing
Scaling and root planing is often the first step in treating periodontal (gum) disease. This deep cleaning procedure removes plaque and tartar (calculus) from above and below the gum line to help eliminate infection and promote healing.

During the procedure, the root surfaces of the teeth are carefully smoothed to remove bacteria and toxins. This helps the gums reattach to the teeth and reduces inflammation. Treatment typically takes about one hour per section (quarter) of the mouth and is usually completed over two visits, though it may be done in a single longer appointment if appropriate.
Local anesthesia is used to ensure comfort, and oral sedation may be available to help make the experience more relaxed.
As a periodontal specialty practice, we utilize advanced instruments and technology, including the Perioscope, which allows us to see below the gum line in real time. This enhanced visibility enables us to thoroughly clean the root surfaces and, in some cases, treat areas that may have previously required surgery.

Antibiotics may be prescribed when necessary, and maintaining excellent oral hygiene at home is essential for successful results.

Following treatment, healing will be evaluated by measuring gum pocket depths and assessing inflammation. This is typically done at a re-evaluation appointment 4 to 6 weeks after treatment or during a periodontal maintenance visit about 3 months later. If additional care is needed, it will be discussed at that time.
