Post-Surgical Instructions
Activity
After your appointment, plan to rest for the remainder of the day. Avoid strenuous activity for several days to support proper healing.
Swelling
Swelling is normal and may peak 48 to 72 hours after surgery.
-
Keep the area cool during the first 72 hours by sipping cold liquids such as water, smoothies, or milkshakes
-
Do not use a straw, as suction can cause bleeding
-
For procedures in the lower jaw, apply an ice pack to the outside of your face near the surgical area
-
Use the ice pack in 10-minute intervals (on and off) throughout the day

Bleeding
Some light bleeding or pink-tinged saliva is normal for several hours after surgery.
-
If bleeding increases, place a moistened (non-herbal) tea bag over the area and apply gentle pressure
-
If bleeding does not improve or becomes heavy, please contact our office immediately

Eating
Maintaining proper nutrition is important for healing.
-
Stick to soft foods for the first few days
-
Chew on the side opposite the surgical area
-
If chewing is uncomfortable, start with cold liquids on the first day
Surgical Dressing
If a dressing has been placed, avoid disturbing it for the first few days.
-
The dressing is primarily for comfort
-
If it becomes loose or falls off and you are not experiencing increased discomfort, it is okay to leave it off

Oral Hygiene
Continue normal brushing and flossing in areas not involved in the surgery. Keeping your mouth clean is important for healing.

Medications
Anti-Inflammatory (NSAIDs)
Choose one over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication for the first 3 days to help reduce swelling and discomfort:
-
Ibuprofen (Advil): 600 mg every 6 hours
or
-
Naproxen (Aleve): 440 mg every 8 hours

Pain Medication
If prescribed, take as needed in addition to the anti-inflammatory medication.
-
Take with food to avoid stomach upset

Antibacterial Mouth Rinse
-
Begin the evening after surgery
-
Rinse 3–5 times daily for 30 seconds, then gently rinse with water

Antibiotics
-
If prescribed, take as directed until the full course is completed
-
Do not stop early unless instructed or if you experience a reaction

Vitamins
-
Multivitamins, Vitamin C, and Vitamin E may help support the healing process
